A field study since 1998 were to explore the effects of fertilization systems on root characteristics,yield and quality of maize in red soil,to investigate the effects of a control(CK),application of chemical fertilizers(NPK),application of organic manure(OM),and NPK fertilizers plus straw returning(NPK+S).Results showed that the plant height,stem diameter,leaf area and leaf area index increased significantly with organic and inorganic treatment than in the control(P < 0.05).
