The fact that human spend more than 80%of the time in buildings.,implies that understanding the indoor environment of any building is important to the occupants and their wellbeing. In this study, the indoor environmental quality(IEQ)of a newly built building for the School of the Built Environment(SBE)is monitored. This building is unique in its design and build because it is modular. This building is naturally ventilated but in some large rooms mechanical ventilation is provided. To investigate its functionality and operation, the building is experimentally monitored. It is also numerically modelled using a thermal and energy simulation software known as Integrated Environmental Solution(IES).Experimental measurements of temperature, relative humidity,CO2,VOCs,lighting,and noise levels are performed. The modelled building is simulated using the measured results as boundary conditions. With varying scenarios including variations in occupancy patterns, heating, lighting profiles, internal gains and air movement, the IEQ of the building is assessed and predicted. From the numerical model,it is envisaged that the building has the potential of overheating in the lecture rooms thereby influencing the thermal comfort of the occupants.Comparatively, the mechanically ventilated rooms were observed to have fewer pollutants than the naturally ventilated rooms. This research is ongoing with the view that a detailed database would be developed after 2 years of occupancy.
