Lung cancer, particularly small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) is a major cause of cancer deaths worldwide.Most patients with SCLC develop multi-drug resistance (MDR) to chemotherapy and this presents a clinical challenge.Ganoderma lucidum is a medicinal mushroom consumed widely in China ("Ling Zhi"), Japan ("Reishi") and other societies.Among other uses of this herb has been the prevention and treatment of cancer.We investigated the potential use of Ganoderma in treating drug-resistant SCLC.Hot water extracts of G.lucidum mycelia showed equivalent cytotoxicity to both drug-sensitive (H69) and MDR (H69VP) SCLC cells (IC50 =5 mg/ml), indicating that the extract was not affected by drug resistance mechanisms.
