The live interaction between a music healer and a patient in a hospital setting can be much more profound than using recorded music.However, evolving technologies have made it increasingly useful to deliver music to hospital patients.The use of music has multiple benefits to hospital patients in the intensive care units, operating room, perioperative areas, L&D, NICU, GI Lab, etc.These benefits also extend to patient outcomes, including cost of care.The presentation will begin with a look at some of effects of music on the stress response in the hospital.The importance of heart rhythm and heart rhythm variability in the fetus, newborn, cardiac and intensive care patient will be examined.A study on using headphone music to aid the recovery of postoperative coronary artery bypass patients in the ICU will be presented, along with examples of how music is used at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.
