  Rock mass is a kind of composite geo-material which often contains inherent discontinuities such as joints, bedding planes and faults.These continuities play an important role for the mechanical behaviors of rock masses.Current mathematical and numerical models for describing behaviors of rock masses are mainly based continuum mechanics, in which discontinuities are considered using the concept of the representative volume elements.These models, though wildly applied, remain limited in modeling strength anisotropy, scale effect and strain softening features of rock masses.
