Arid Australia is characterised by low rainfall and relatively high temperature. There has been a decline in rainfall in Australia in recent years. The only source of freshwater in most part of arid Australia are limited aquifers which were soon exhausted by the settlers who colonised the arid land in 1840s, and mound springs which are formed as a result of fractures or rock faults.
