Palabora Mining Company is an Integrated Copper Mine,-Smelter and -Manufacturing unit situated in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.Copper concentrate,the life blood of the company,is classified as a naturally occurring radioactive substance by national legislation,(National Nuclear Regulatory Act and Regulations),and the site is subsequently holder of a nuclear authorisation in terms of said act.A basic requirement is the need to conduct Worker Safety Assessments,with the first assessment being done in the early nineties and more recently,in 2012.This paper provides information on the nuclide content,assessment methodology and assessment outcome.It will also describe the methodology proposed to provide guidance in determining the future monitoring strategy.
