  Rice hulls have high silica content.Several researchers have proposed carbothermal reduction to produce silicon metal.Porous silicon has been demonstrated to store hydrogen.In this work we present a process and a small‐scale apparatus to synthesize hydrogen storage media from rice hulls.Included are several innovative advances starting with a thermochemical biomass conversion technology known as Indirectly‐Heated Pyrolytic Gasification (I‐HPG).
