The sea-air flux of iodine is believed to have an important influence on ozone depletion, and the formation of new particles or potential cloud condensation nuclei in the troposphere. The iodocarbons (e.g.CH3I,C2H5I,CH2I2,CH2ClI) are currently believed to be the major vectors for the transfer of iodine across the sea surface.Despite their apparent importance very little is known about the major factors controlling iodocarbon concentrations and distributions in the marine environment. The major aim of the UEA/PML-led UK SOLAS project INSPIRE (Investigation of the Near Surface Production of Iodocarbons - Rates and Exchanges) is to understand the mechanisms controlling the cycling of iodocarbons in the surface oceans in order to be able to predict sea-air emissions of these compounds via remotely sensed products and modeling. This aim will be met through a linked series of laboratory, field and modeling studies focused in the waters around Cape Verde.
