Due to the portal venous system and favorable genetic factors for colonization, the liver is the most common target for metastases of any origin. As surgical resection of metastases has the potential to cure patients, precise radiation offers less invasive regional treatment without the risks going along with an operation. Here Proton Therapy (PT) comes into play.Using protons, malign lesions can be irradiated precisely and with decreased exposure-dose to the risk organs.Between June 2009 and September 2012, 30 patients with urtresectable liver metastases were treated with PT at Rinecker Proton Therapy Center (RPTC), Munich, Germany.Being the first Proton Therapy Center to publicize clinical results of PT in liver metastases up to now (PubMed, status 27.01.2014) the aim of this study was to take the first step towards evaluation of clinical effectiveness of PT in liver metastases.
