All midwinter major warming events in the northern high latitude stratosphere are identified from the ERA-Interim dataset from 1979 to 2009, and then classified into two types, i.e., long-lasting major warming events (>20 days) and short-lasting major warming events (< 10 days). The impact of long-lasting major warming events on the tropospheric and stratospheric temperature and circulation is compared with that of short-lasting major warming events.
