Surgical resection offers the only chance of long-term survival for selected patients with primary or metastatic liver cancer.The majority of these patients present with extra-hepatic disease or with extensive hepatic tumnour burden, and are no candidates for potentially curative treatment.Several other therapeutic modalities such as chemotherapy or ablative surgery, which are considered palliative, can be offered to these patients.At this point, the role of ablative therapy is considered complementary to surgical resection.Minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) is looked upon with scepticism because of concerns regarding clinical and oncological outcome.Many reports focus on the feasibility and safety of MILS in patients with liver cancer.
