When atoms interact with an intense short pulsed laser field,a substantial fraction of them will not ionize, but will eventually be found in excited states. The frustrated tunneling ionization(FTI) model, which extends the tunneling or simple mans model by fully taking into account the Coulomb field, allows for the description of strong-field excitation in the tunneling regime.
