Drug transporters are membrane proteins involved in the uptake or efflux of drugs by several tissues such as the intestine,liver,kidney and brain.They can have a significant impact on the pharmacokinetics of endogenous and exogenous compounds.Also,co-administered drugs or nutrients can influence the transporter activity which may lead to changes in the pharmacokinetics of drugs and,as a result,possibly to reduced efficacy or increased toxicity (so called drug-drug or drug-nutrient interactions).Drug transport across transporters are membrane proteins involved in the uptake or efflux of drugs by several tissues such as the intestine,liver,kidney and brain.The impact of transporters on drug pharmacokinetics has led to increasing interest from the pharmaceutical industry.
