Upscaling of Organic Solar Cells using Roll-to-Roll Manufacturing

  The process of upscaling OPV from single cell roll coated devices to large area modules and finally to many hundreds of meters of interconnected multi cell devices are demonstrated.Roll-to-roll(R2R)manufacturing of OPV differs from the standard spin-coating technique in many ways that require a whole new set of skills and optimizations of materials,substrates and methodology.Upscaling can be costly in terms of materials use and we have therefore developed a number of small and intermediate scale coating/printing machines that bridge the gap to semi-industrial equipment.This talk will show how small scale R2R fabrication can be used to screen many new polymer inks and how procedures can be developed and qualified using a mini roll coater(MRC).Ink deposition and crucial morphological structure evolution can be studied using a small R2R machine developed for X-ray characterization studies.Finally large scale coating/printing of huge series of modules or hundreds of meters of modules for a solar park will be demonstrated.
