The genetic modification of pigs could have many agricultural and biomedicine applications.Ectopic overexpression of foreign genes is necessary in many cases to achieve transgenic pigs with favorable phenotypes. However, random integration of foreign genes often leads to unpredictable expression and unstable phenotypes.Rosa26 is a locus used for constitutive, ubiquitous gene expression. The animal models in which the Rosa26 locus was targeted into a Cre-mediated reporter gene can be used for creating transgenic animals consistently expressing any foreign genes with a high level. They also are reliable animal reporter models for lineage tracing related to human disease and regeneration studies.
