The EJC (exon junction complex) is deposited on spliced mRNAs, upstream of the position where an intron has been moved. The core of EJC consists of Mago nahsi, Y14, elF4A-3 and BTZ.In animals, the EJC participates in basic biological processes, including mRNA surveillance, export of mRNA from the nucleus to cytoplasm, the localization of mRNAs and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. However, the role of EJC in plants remains unknown. Here we identified Mago nashi (OsMago1 and OsMago2) and Y14 (OsY14) homologues from Oryza sativa L.These genes are constitutively expressed, however, a peak in inflorescence is induced by certain fertilization signals, indicating a role in reproductive development.OsMago1 is localized in cytoplasm and nucleolus, while OsY14 is predominately localized in nucleolus. As their animal orthologs form an obligate heterodimer, OsMago1 and OsY14 have strong reciprocal interaction not only in yeast but also in planta.
