Empirical evidence related to the prevalence and severity of preventable factors within the provider/patient relationship are imperative to identify so interpersonally based prevention, detection and early interventions can be developed.This presentation reports findings of a prevalence investigation exploring the quality of provider interactions in the context ofpostnatal mood disruptions.Patterns, new case and estimated annual case prevalence, and relationships among womens negative birth perception, provider disaffirmation, perinatal trauma symptoms, and perinatal depression at six months postpartum are reported among 71 postpartum women in a north central region of the United States.New case prevalence, calculated among the primary variables for the sample, was used to estimate annual prevalence for county and state populations.Results indicate the prevalence of perinatal trauma, disaffirmation, and depression are comparable to other diseases with high public health burden.Furthermore, new case prevalence of negativc birth perception, perinatal trauma symptoms, disaffirmation and depression are far higher than prominent high burden diseases currently receiving statewide attention.Health care providers need to regard these phenomena as important health threats and adjust their own professional behaviors accordingly.Professionals who care for perinatal women need to assume responsibility and accountability for the development of their interpersonal and relational skills.
