A SLOTTING METHOD FOR 2D DIGITAL GEAR TOOTH SURFACES

  A Digital Gear Tooth Surface (DGTS) is an approach to description of a gear tooth surface with discrete points.It will be widely used in gear design and manufacture in the future.A DGTS cannot be machined by traditional gear shaping technology.Based on the theories of digital conjugate surface and gear meshing,a slotting method for 2D Digital Gear Tooth Surfaces (TDGTS) is developed in this paper.In this study,it does not call for a continuous surface model and has no need to fit discrete points; the conjugate motion between the DGTS represented by discrete points and the slotting cutter figuration represented by analytic function in the manufacture process are direct investigated.Conjugate points on the slotting cutter section corresponding to the discrete points on the digital tooth surface and conjugate movements are disclosed.Automatic sequences of the generating movement parameters have been performed and the discrete movements are interpolated into continuous generation motions under the orders,which can result in realization of continuous slotting of DGTS.Computer-simulated results of the example and experiment at ones of slotting involute 2D non-standard shaped DGTS verify the presented method.The research develops a new idea for the machining of DGTS,which breaks the limitations of conventional approaches based on analytic geometry for slotting.It is of important theoretical and practical values to shape digital surface.The presented method is not only be applicable to machining of discrete DGTS,but also contributes to processing analytic gear tooth surface with complex geometric design and other digital conjugate surfaces.
