Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that thrives in the human body as a commensal and can become a pathogen when the host is immunocompromised.Efficient carbon assimilation in a diverse range of host niches is critical for the commensal-pathogen transition.Interestingly, unlike in vitro studies that regularly use fermentable sugars such as glucose, these host niches are glucose-limited and C.albicans is exposed to complex mixtures of alternative carbon sources.
