  In this paper, high purity magnesium hydroxide was prepared by using carbide slag and salt magnesium chloride as raw materials.The salt magnesium was purified by recrystallization method, and carbide slag reacted with ammonium chloride to produce ammonia gas.The ammonia gas was bubbled into magnesium chloride solution for producing the magnesium hydroxide.Ammonium chloride in filtrate could be recycled.Various effect factors of Mg(OH)2 yield were investigated, and the Mg(OH)2 was identified by XRD and SEM.Experiment results show that optimum reaction conditions were as follows: the rate of ammonium chloride to magnesium chloride was 5.0, the concentration of magnesium chloride was 2.0mol/L, the reaction time was 60 minutes, the reaction temperature was 25℃, the ageing time was 2 hours.Under optimum reaction conditions, the Mg(OH)2 yield was more than 89.08%, the purity of Mg(OH)2 was above 99.29%, and the particle size was about 1 μm.
