To avoid the inverse of large sparse matrix in the explicit Lagriangian finite element method,a lumped mass matrix is usually used.This practice comes from numerical experiment and lacks theoretical explanation.When derive the discrete formulations of the explicit Lagriangian finite element method using the least action principle,the physical meaning of the lumped mass matrix becomes clear.
