  Flame plasma is a normal technique for surface treatment on paperboard,aluminium foil and polymer films for adhesion improvement in packaging and printing industries.In this presentation the principles and technical developments of flame treatment technologies have been discussed.Flame treatment is effected by direct exposure of the substrate to a gas flame for a short period of time.The flame plasma carries some excess oxygen,which takes part in the combustion,building intermediate products in forms of such as active ions and radicals.These species bombard the surface and thus build up functionalities such as carbonyl,hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on it.These polar groups enable a reaction with the coatings to be applied to enhance adhesion.Thus,flame treatment is not a heat application,but a controlled use of the chemical property of the flame.The most important parameters,e.g.air/gas ratio,flame gap,burner angle and specific energy out put,for flame treatment on paperboard to optimize treating effect have been discussed as well
