Ion imprinted membrane for selective binding and permeation of tetramethylammonium (TMA) cations from aqueous solutions was developed by means of phase inversion technique. The thin imprinted membrane was fabricated by casting the solution of perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) without using any cross-linker or initiator. The attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) indicates that both imprinted and non-imprinted membranes has the same chemical composition. While the higher adsorption amount of TMAH on imprinted membrane suggests that the addition of TMA cations in the process of casting membrane may change the microstructure of the membrane by dispersing the functional acid group more scattered in the bulk membrane, which in turn increases the recognition ability. The maximum adsorption (qm) of TMAH obtained from the Langmuir adsorption isothermal is 0.94 mmol/g on imprinted membrane. The non-imprinted membrane has a slightly small qm but remarkably lower permselectivity. Therefore the permeation performances of the imprinted membranes could be regarded as facilitated transport mechanism. The increasing of temperature from 25℃ to 65℃ was nearly disadvantageous not only to maximum adsorption capacity but to permselectivity of imprinted membrane. The regeneration of the imprinted membrane was investigated and it can be concluded that the TMA imprinted membrane has good reusability.
