Diosgenin is an important steroidal intermediate in pharmaceutical industry.Dioscorea zingiberensis C.H.Wright(DZW) tubers are widely-used for diosgenin production.This study focuses on recycling fiber and starch in plant tubers using steam explosion as the pretreatment before acid hydrolysis in diosgenin production process.Influences of steam explosion on physicochemical properties were studied by using thermogravimetric analyses(TGA),X-Ray and scanning electron microscope(SEM) methods.Deglucosidation effects caused by steam explosion was revealed by quantifying three saponins precursors (Zingiberensis newsaponin,Deltonin and Prosapogenin A of Dioscin).Diosgenin and monosaccharides yields after hydrolysis were also determined.A comparison of the pattern treated under different severity factors suggested the proper pretreatment conditions.
