Fibrosis is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is characterized by excessive synthesis of type Ⅰ collagen within the parenchymal organs.There is no cure for fibrosis and excessive collagen synthesis is irreversible.Collagen synthesis is regulated by the conserved structural element in the 5 UTR of collagen mRNAs,the 5 stem-loop.The 5 stem-loop is found only in collagen 1(Ⅰ),2(Ⅰ) and 1(Ⅲ) mRNAs,but not in any other mRNA.
