A major problem in studying phenotypes is understanding how genes work together to provide large-scale organization and functions.Conventional approaches usually involve reductionist studies where the building blocks of an organism are studied,and specific functions are attributed to particular genes.The equally important but harder problem involves the synthesis of groups of genes into modules that are orchestrated by the complex timing of gene expression at higher levels,and eventually correlate these functional modules with phenotypic traits.
