  For liquid fuels,their burning characteristics are important.Burning of an isolated droplet depends upon the heat and mass transfer from the ambience.For fuels having low boiling point,basically the mass transfer in terms of the quantity of oxygen available for combustion,will be important.Burning characteristics of an isolated droplet will be affected when another neighboring droplet burns along with it.This is due to two interference effects; enhancement in heat transfer to the droplet and competition for oxygen between the droplets.In a spray environment,studying the interference effects as a whole will not be easy as well as accurate.Therefore,fundamental study in a controlled lab-scale experimental setup,to understand the side-by-side burning of two droplets,has been envisaged in this paper.Ethanol is chosen as the fuel and suspended droplet technique is employed.Two quartz fibers,each having 1 mm diameter and with beads of diameter around 1.64 mm,are mounted on a traverse such that the distance between them can be varied.Simultaneous ignition is initiated by using a long electrically heated nichrome wire placed near the bottom of both the droplets.Shadowgraph technique is used to visualize the droplet regression rate from the video captured using a high definition digital camera.Matlab code is used for image processing and to measure the instantaneous droplet diameters.Each experiment has been carried out at least 6 times and the effects of separation distance between the droplets on the burning rate constant have been reported in detail.The burning dynamics has been explained using the droplet surface regression curves,as well as using the shadowgraph images at two instants; just after ignition and around 75%of the experimental duration.The burning rate constant values of the droplets are presented as a function of separation distance.
