Preparation and properties of AlCl3-BPC ionic liquids

N-butylpyridinium chloride (BPC) and aluminum chloride-n-butylpyridinium chloride (A1C13-BPC) ionic liquids were prepared in this paper. The obtained intermediate BPC was identified by H NMR and Raman spectra. The electrochemical windows and electric conductivities of acidic, neutral and basic AlCl3-BPC ionic liquids were determined. The electrochemical window of neutral ionic liquids is the widest of the three A1C13-BPC ionic liquids. The electric conductivities are increased with increasing temperature, and can be described by Arrhenius equation. The sequence of electric conductivities can be expressed as KA > Kb > KC, where ka, kb, and KC are electric conductivities for acidic, basic and neutral AIC13-BPC ionic liquids, respectively.
