Chronic increase of glucocorticoid level is known to play an important role in age-related neuron degeneration and poor memory.The intracellular glucocorticoid level is increased by 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type1 (11β-HSD1) which converts biologically inactive11-dehydrogencorticosterone to active corticosterone in the rat.
