In order to improve the capacity for emergency relief, not only should rescue teams be established and improved in the scientific and reasonable sense, but an advanced and reliable emergency rescue technology is mastered,to the advantage of timely and effective relief work which will reduce casualty and financial loss.On Dec.25,2015,due to goaf collapse occurred in an abandoned gypsum mine, the nearby Yurong gypsum mine caved in accordingly in Wanzhuang Village,Pingyi County,Shandong province, trapping several coal miners underground. The nonstop collapse of rocks and roadways had obstructed all underground "life passages",which rendered it impossible to implement roadway rescue schemes. To guard against secondary disaster, the Emergency Relief Headquarter decided to adopt the ground drilling rescue scheme. As the geologic structure of the mining area was very complicated, the drilling head was stuck for several times during the process of large diameter drilling construction, which delayed the rescue progress. In this connection, the life-detection drilling system (LDDS,the same below),a self-development of the National Mine Rescue Xi’an Research Center, was launched. It helps effectively overcome several rescue problems, such as underground life detection, ascertainment of the reason why large-diameter boreholes stuck or subsided, and roadway environment detection. This indispensable part of the rescue work has created the first success in borehole rescue in the Chinese history of emergency mine rescue.
