Interannual variability in climate and anthropogenic emissions has determined the observed year-to-year surface ozone fluctuations over the United States, and separating these two drivers is a question of continuous great interest.Ozone undergoes drastically different chemical-physical processes between the daytime and the nighttime. Thus the effects of climate variability and anthropogenic emissions on the historical ozone changes may also contrast between the two time regimes.
