Spherical needlets provide a multiscale decomposition of real square integrable functions on the unit sphere. The original spherical needlet decomposition has its coefficients defined by inner product integrals. We use an additional quadrature rule to construct a fully discrete version of the original needlet approximation and prove the convergence error for smooth spherical functions. The theory is illustrated numerically by the approximation for a function of known smoothness, using symmetric spherical designs.
