Phosphogypsum(PG)is becoming a huge liability for the global phosphate industry both economically and environmentally. The recent sink hole in a PG stack in Florida,USA and numerous water contamination incidents in China indicate that stacking is not a safe disposal method for PG,and that environmental sound use is the ultimate solution to the PG problem.Recently,China leads the world in developing technologies for various uses for PG.However, the current focus on construction materials needs to be redirected towards purification of PG and recycle of sulfur. This paper discusses the necessity for PG purification for most PG uses and presents a new technical route for low temperature reduction of PG to produce elemental sulfur from PG.Thermodynamic analysis of the technology route shows tremendous energy efficiency advantages over the sulfur dioxide method. It also eliminates the transportation radius limitation of all other PG utilizations.
