Today,our medical profession is in constant threat of becoming just another trade.Medical care is now less of a noble calling and more of a commercial transaction.Some healthcare leaders have blamed this professional degradation to the waves of change in the practice of medicine.These waves of change include (1) the explosion of medical knowledge and treatments; (2) the wide use of information technology; (3) the increasing emphasis on outcomes,standards and accountability; (4) the replacement of public trust on doctors with assertive patient autonomy; (5) the idea of good medical care is an entitlement and no longer an expectation; and (6) the commercialization and globalization of healthcare.Despite these changes,the medical community must hold on to the ideals and foundation of building up medical professionalism by engaging activelyin continuing medical education; continuing professional development; maintenance of competence; recertification and revalidation.This lecture presentation will touch on the Tao (the Way or the Path) of Medical Professionalism and Continuing Professional Development,with the objective to reverse the trend of medical de-professionalism.
