A new sandwich enzyme immunoassay produced with full length HBc particulate antigen (HBcAg) has been developed for detection of antibody against (HBcAg).Antigenic specificity of this assay is directed against HBcAg, and not HBeAg.Analytical sensitivity of this assay is10 folds higher than that of the conventional competitive assay or the indirect assay.In a sera panel from NICPBP, 359 (97%) samples were tested positive by the new sandwich assay compared with 346(94%) and 339(92%) tested positive by commercial indirect assay and competitive assay, respectively.In 15 samples of occult HBV infection, 73%(11/15) were tested positive by the new sandwich assay compared with 33%(5/15) tested positive by indirect assay and competitive assay.We conclude that the sandwich anti-core assay is more sensitive than competitve assay and indirect assay, especially for occult HBV infection.
