Chitin is a linear biopolymer composed of β-1,4 linked N-acetylglucosamines and presents as a vital component of the cuticular exoskeleton and inner linings of peritrophic matrix of the gut epithelium and trachea in insects and other arthropods.Arthropod growth and development are strictly dependent on precise control (rate and timing) of chitin biosynthesis and degradation to allow for molting and regeneration of new cuticle and peritrophic matrix.
