1931年九一八事变发生后,东北军民自发组成抗日武装,开展反抗日本侵略者的斗争。东北抗日义勇军,即是东北抗战初期以东北军旧部为主体的抗日武装力量。冯占海将军所领导的吉林抗日救国军,是最早投入抗日武装斗争的一支劲旅,亦是抗日义勇军的骨干力量。他率部首揭抗日大旗,转战吉林北部的广大地区,尤其在保卫哈尔滨的战斗中发挥了重要作用。
After the September 18, 1931 Incident, the armed forces in northeast China voluntarily formed armed resistance and carried out the struggle against the Japanese aggressors. The Northeast Anti-Japanese Volunteers, that is, the early days of the Northeast Anti-Japanese War to the old army as the main part of the anti-Japanese armed forces. The Anti-Japanese National Salvation Army led by General Feng Zhanhai was the first hard-liners to be put into armed struggle in the anti-Japanese war and the backbone of the anti-Japanese volunteer army. He led the unveiling of the anti-Japanese flag to the broad areas of northern Jilin, and played an important role especially in the battle to defend Harbin.
