In the additive manufacturing (AM) process,mechanical parts often require temporary supports to prevent from collapsing or warping.Since the involvement of supports leads to an increase of total material usage,build and removal time,it is desired to limit or completely eliminate these materials.This work aims at developing a topology optimization method for the design of self-supporting structures that can be directly realized by AM without additional supports.Moreover,considering the fact that the critical overhang angle (COA) is process-dependent input parameter provided by the manufacturing or design engineer,various COAs are tested to investigate their influences upon the optimized topologies.
