Objective It is well known that the lateral hypothalamus (LH) plays a critical role in regulating food intake and body weight.The LH is a part of neural system involved in the central evaluation of gustatory inputs,too.The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of LH on taste preference and taste acceptance in rats.Methods Taste preferences were determined in rats with bilateral electrolytic LH lesions and in sham-lesioned rats by a two-bottle choice test,and taste acceptance by a one-bottle test.In two-bottle choice test,the response to a range of concentrations of four basic tastants was observed in rats.NaCl-water,citric acid (CA)-water,quinine HC1 (QHCl)-water and saccharin-water choice tests were conducted between water and one of the following five concentrations (0.01,0.03,0.1,0.3 and 1.0 mol/L NaC1; 0.01,0.1,1.0,10,100 mmol/L CA; 5,10,20,50,100 μmol/L QHC1; 0.3,2.5,7.5,25,50 mmol/L saccharin),respectively.The choice test took olace each day at 08:30 am and lasted 1 h.
