High-resolution (20 km and 60 km) AGCMs have been developed at MRI/JMA and applied to climate projections for extreme weathers such as tropical cyclones and heavy precipitation, and also to studies on regional climate change and 2 to 5 km downscaling (Kitoh et al., 2009) in the two projects for the past decade, sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (J-MEXT).
