After the experimental impoundment of the Three Gorges reservoir (TGR) in 2008, sediment transportation after flooding disappeared at reservoir tail and the sediment transportation stage was postponed to the water level downfall period of TGR before flooding with the water level increasing and the optimization of the regulation, the sediment transport law had changed and cumulative sedimentation at TGR tail had occurred.

The sediment balance in a natural river may change when water enters a reservoir, resulting in a natural trapping effect of the sediment particles.

Improved understandings of fine sediment settling velocities in The Three Gorges Reservoir are still important, due to the serious siltation since its impoundment.
