Cancer development is a complex phenomenon that involves changes in tumor physiology.These can be triggered by hypoxia that leads to oncogenic metabolism and acidosis in tumor microenviroment.Acidosis has been attributed to accumulation of lactate and protons and experiments with glycolysisdeficient cells showed that CO2 is a significant source of acidity in tumors and suggested a role for carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme catalyzing the reversible hydration of CO2.CAIX is a active transmembrane CA isoform expressed in solid tumors, but absent from the normal tissues.
