There is an urgent need for novel antibiotics to fight against the infections caused by the increasingly drug-resistant microbial pathogens that still severely harm human health and life. However, the currently cultivable microorganisms for the discovery of novel antibiotics are limited. In this presentation,an ingenious technology that facilitates the cultivation of microorganisms by permitting continuous access to the chemical background present in their native environment is applied to access the yet unexplored uncultivable microorganisms for discovering novel antibiotics.About hundred previously unexplored bacteria and fungi were obtained from soils and marine sediments.Over twenty novel antibiotics with potent activities against microbial pathogens including drug-resistant MRSA,VRE and QRSA were isolated and identified. The following figure is the structures of some novel antibiotics discovered from current investigation.
