  After the successful introduction of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in the late 1980s, and similar sorbent-based techniques (e.g.stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE)), analogous approaches of miniaturized liquid-phase extractions followed in the mid-1990s.In recent years, various modes of sorbent-and solvent-based analyte extraction methods have appeared.The interesting about the latter is that many of them were developed in-house in many research laboratories around the world.Our group has been involved with the development in liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) techniques, including single-drop microextraction (microdrop LPME), continuous-flow microextraction, solvent-bar microextraction, hollow fiber LPME, etc.Although SPME and SBSE have been commercialized and can be fairly easily automated, there has been minimal work done on automating alternative in-house-developed LPME procedures.
