Ischemic heart disease is expected to become the leading cause of death by the end of year 2010 and is currently the main cause of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).Despite significant progress in treatment mortality from AMI remains high and is partially attributed to so-called lethal reperfusion injury.One of the strategies limiting infarct size and reperfusion injury is ischemic preconditioning (IPC), which is an application of transient, non-lethal episodes of ischemia and reperfusion before longer occlusion of coronary artery.2 decades ago, we start to realize that volatile anesthetics can offer the same cardioprotecive properties (similar to IPC) when applied before and after period of myocardial ischemia (anesthetic pre-and post-conditioning-APC).
