Preparation and Pore Texture of Activated Carbon from Sawdust by Boric Acid Catalysis

  Activated carbons were prepared from sawdust with phosphoric acid and boric acid activation.The effects of phosphoric acid-to-sawdust mass ratio,the amount of boric acid,activation temperature and activation time on properties of products were investigated by orthogonal experiments.The results show that the products’ yield can reach 33.5%,meanwhile adsorption value of methyleneblue and iodine can respectively reach 225 mg·g-1 and 855 mg·g-1 in chemical activation process with the mass ratio of 1.5:1 phosphoric acid-to-sawdust,the weight percent of 1% boric acid in activation temperature of 400 ℃ carbonized for 60 min which are optimum conditions in making activated carbons.The reaction conditions are more moderate in presence of boric acid in comparison to classical preparation of activated carbons used phosphoric acid activation,and the appropriative activated carbons with different pore structure applied to liquid adsorption in various environments can be produced by adjusting the process conditions.
