Cell survival and proliferation rely on the supply of glucose (Glc), glutamine (Gin) and oxygen.Two major metabolic features of cancer are the Warburg effect and glutaminolysis, illustrating the importance of Glc and Gin.However, solid tumors frequently outgrow the blood supply, resulting in hypoxia and depletion of Glc and Gin.While hypoxic sensing pathway has been well studied, how ceils sense and respond to Glc and Gin depletion remains elusive.We confirmed that depletion of either Glc or Gin resulted in growth arrest and eventually cell death.Using microarray, we profiled gene expression patterns of cancer cells cultured in defined Glc and Gin concentrations.
