  In radiotherapy,ionizing photons or particles deliver their energy in cells by the formation of tracks composed of small nanoscopic bubbles or "spurs".Each of these bubbles has a diameter of about 20 nm and contains on average 30 eV of energy.The latter is shared between molecular excitation,ionisation and,in a larger proportion,as kinetic energy of secondary electrons(SE).Owing to the small amount of energy deposited in each bubble,most SEs have energies ranging from zero to 30 eV.Our group has been investigating during the last three decades,the mechanisms involved when such low-energy electrons(LEEs)interact within nanoscopic dimensions with biologically important molecules,including DNA.
