Aim To analyze the effectiveness and safety of antidepressants in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.Method Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published on Pubmed and Medline were surveyed and referenced articles were studied.Data was collected from 1966 to May 2014.Literatures were screened with established inclusion/exclusion criteria and selected ones were further evaluated with Jadad scores.Data was gathered and analyzed by RevMan5.0 to calculate improvement rate, side effect rate and withdrawal rate with a 95％ confidence interval (CI).Finally, we analyzed the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on abdominal pain and quality of life.
